New Mexico | fits all so to speak in cattle ( Thank God ).
Have bought hiefers off some of the big rough country places that rough em till they're 2's thus they calf as 3's.
Also on the synchronized deals just buy the opens and breed em.
They make good cows, perhaps just were not as mature as their sisters at the time.
On your real fertile cattle ( say the angus / jersey cross ), you can breed em at 7 to 8 months of age and they calf before they're 15 months old.
Alot more calves are raised in "marginal type" environments vs perhaps those perfect green monoculture pastures in the books with pictures.
That means most have to make allowances for that more marginal enviro.
Alot of ways to do that. Cattle types/ages/breeding seasons/ages etc..
Just no such thing as a one size fits all deal.
If there was, then it's easy to totally consolidate.
Just like dairy, hogs and chickies.
Thank God we are not thee typical usa business scenario where a couple outfits own it all and everyone else just works for those for less to no dough.
It's those small niche players ( exponential growth each year for 7 strait now ) in beef the past 5 years who have cleaned the usa beef consolidated / corporate clocks so to speak.
The niches get MORE for their finished cattle. ALOT more.
That makes feeder cattle higher yet and there's a bunch of us little folks that know, MORE is always more.
That simple.
