nw oh | We sell holsteins grade and yield in the east. Last winter we had a load that would have fetched a premium if we would not have met our choice specs (negative spread). We started pulling cattle forward and messing with hotter implants and a few other things to maximize efficiencies with high priced feed. Now we have a wider spread and sending out only 60% choice cattle. Just when I zig the market and business zags. I still think we are better off with our current system because our yields are a lot higher and we are not sending out as many yield grade 4's and muscle score 3's.
I also think the high temperatures this summer did not help the cattle and added stress. | |
