We have had very good rain and grass this summer in Wisconsin. These bales are 1-1/2 years old and wrapped but were 16% protein when I sampled them a year ago. These heifers have never grazed corn. I made that mistake last winter when I let a couple BWF graze corn because I was going to process them then changed my mind and decided to calve them out. Calving those two was definitely not fun and a learning experience. From now on any cattle to be retained (cows, heifers, bull) get no grain other than their gentling treat of a bucket every week or two. Works out to maybe a pound per head per week. I don't think it contributes to their condition but it does keep them coming to me and following the white bucket when I need to move them to another paddock. Other than that, no grain. I guess some genetics work well on grass and hay.
