I like Jim's idea. Neighbor has a couple loading chutes with steel sides just filled with packed dirt. Wouldn't last long loading thousands head every year, but works fine for his 1000 or so. If it gets a little low grab a loader bucket of dirt and top it off. It is quiet and the cattle don't seem to balk as bad compared to boards.
