| Marketing services have never excited me much. I don't get very sophisticated with my marketing, but if you know your cost and where you need to be (I know that can be a moving target) and sell periodically through the year you can end up pretty good most of the time. Split your crop between forward contract, fall sales, and storage (on farm or elevator). I have found grain bins to be a huge advantage and I think to have enough storage for 1/3, perhaps 1/2, of your corn crop can be a good level. You have a place to dump when the elvator is closed or when lines are hours long. You can usually capture 40-50 basis improvement alone. You can dry much cheaper than what elevators charge. You can speculate long without margins calls - yes its still less money in your pocket if the market goes south but your broker isn't demanding a check immediately either. | |
