Central Illinois | Speaking as a central Illinois farmer, I hear a lot of the doom and gloom, even in good years. I think a lot of us have gotten used to averaging 200 plus corn on corn and bought into the hype that Monsanto was selling. That, and we naturally think we are God's gift to corn growers :).
However, there is enough corn shelled around here to get some general ideas about central Illinois. The flat and black has been hurt by the wet weather. My rolling timber soils will out yield my flat and black, and the corn after beans look to be substantially better than continuous corn. Looking at our area, we have LOTS of flat and black and continuous corn.
Now these yields are no where as bad as 1988, and I don't think any one is claiming that. Having said all this, I can see our averages down 10 to 20% this year. Frankly, with what we have shelled so far, I would settle for 160 bushel corn. | |
