south central IOWA | Hey, you always tell me on bales of hay, let the cows be the judge on how good of hay it is. Have you been out to my pasture that I just mowed and baled? Are the cows eating the fresh regrowth or are they staying in the stuff that didn't get mowed?
I'm sure someone like Jim can post some scientific/college information on clipping your pastures but my thinking is how much feed value is there in that dried up stem you want your cows to eat. If a person would clip it so that it would regrow something that they would like, the pasture might produce better.
I don't believe in, that mowing is a source of weed control. I also will say that I haven't been around long enough to see a severe drought on my pastures and that mowing them in my circumstances would only work at certain times of the year, at certain times of the pastures present condition.
Maybe someone on here can back me up on this and give you something to think about while you're mowing hay tomorrow. :-) | |
