Have you tried a 802.11n router like a Belkin Pre-N? I bought one of these for my mom and dad and it works extremely well. I bought this router for them a few years back and installed it on the third floor bedroom (big house!). I connected to the laptop and went downstairs then out the back door and walked over a block and a half away. I still had a very fast and stable connection. This was in the city so the signal was going through the brick walls of the house, the fence around the property, trees, neighbor's houses, garages, etc. The maximum range for an 11n router is supposed to be about 375 feet.
