Under this one roof, you can get both opinions on OnStar.  My husband, when he got his first new pickup in almost 30 years, searched long and hard to find one that didn't have OnStar on it.  He thinks it's a waste of money and just plain silly.

I bought my Envoy about 6mos before he got the pickup, and it came with OnStar.  I frequently haul our grandkids and also my mother around, and for me, it's worth the expense.  I figure all I have to do is get caught out one time with the kids with a flat or some other issue and it's paid for itself.  As long as I'm in a position to have the little kids or my mom in a vehicle, I'll have the OnStar if I can.   And yes, I've had them unlock it twice in 5 years.  :)
