I've binned a lot of hedged bushels and set the basis later, and totally agree that is ideal. But it's hard to fathom "only 5-10%" not being hedged for some who live where year-to-year variability of production is commonly 50%..... Hence, why some price more aggressively on what they intend to send over the scales at harvest vs. what they are unsure about how many bushels they will have left to keep at home.
Now, if you're talking about setting some more futures in place when you actually know what production is to then capture some carry to the March/May or whatever, then that is valid too. Lord knows a lot of us should have had the sense to be doing that last Thanksgiving, with 20/20 hindsight. |
