You are funding the research, not him. If he thinks he needs to take some leave, the research will have to wait. You are not obligated to continue funding him. If it's important research, someone else will pick it up.

Thank you, I just sometimes think Im just outta touch and stuck in my ways. he is a young guy of course and a smart one. he does good work.

That may explain his self-entitled attitude.
