southern MN | Here we drain small to medium size prairie potholes. Basically you have a dozen shallow bowls of 3-50 acres. One a little higher than the other. Typically the outlet into a ditch is near a bigger, shallow grade bowl.
The fella upstream on the tile keeps adding more tile so water drains faster, and eventually the water fills the tile main and then it will surface in the downstream bowls. Bubbles up out of the intakes.
So here, generally, the higher elevation fields on the far end of the tile mains will drain out first and with little difficulty. Even if a tile is blocked downstream, the water will end up draining away moderately well from the upper fields.
The fella on the bottom, closes to the ditch ends up with wet ground until there is enough tile space and ditch space and all for the lower land to also drain. Needs the biggest tile and gets the least reward from it. Anything slowing down water flow will end up with water backed up ont his field.
Here it is the opposite of what you say more often than not.
