The logger I work with cuts and lands the logs. He then gets 3 bids and shows them to me. Top bid gets the logs. The logger figures his costs on the board feet of lumber cut and skid (he shares that number before any trees are cut). Each bidder scales the logs and I (and the logger) know how many board feet are there. The logger also scales the logs. His number is very close to what the buyers come up with. I feel this is fair.
If your logger doesn't show you the bid sheets, I think you may be getting screwed.
