Chilliwack, British Columbia | I've considered the same as you, we do our recheck at 100 days I think, maybe 90, 2 week interval.
The problem with milk or blood tests, as i've been told, is if they lose the calf at say 50 days, it takes some time for the milk or blood to reflect this, in my mind this might be a 2 week period, that might be wrong, but the time between is what put me to doing it with the arm. We were doing nothing before this, relying on the activity system to catch them when returned to heat. Worked good for a while!
We also sort our cows into a catch pen, so we don't go looking for them, the cows are waiting on us.
That seems pretty high for the vet hourly rate, is there anything they would be willing to work on with you? I bet it keeps you efficient which is why you are asking this question!
