Earlville, NY | Dairy farm here. We do vet check once a week, do preg checks with ultrasound at 29 days. We have been doing re-checks again at 55 days or so. We generally don't have many aborts but seems most common time frame is 40-60 days after service.
Our DHIA area manager was here, says we can do preg checks now from the individual monthly milk samples for $4/cow. Trying to decide if we would like to try doing re-checks via milk samples. We are also considering doing milk sample preg checks for cows prior to dry-off, we currently don't check them until they have been sorted out to dry off.
I believe with the cost of vet being what it is ($390/hour here, plus $65 stop charge) doing the re-checks would be cheaper than hunting for cows time-wise, but it would be once a month versus once a week.
How many producers do pregnancy re-checks? If so what methods do you use and when do you do it? | |
