Subject: RE: Cattle fencing questions

Douglass Kansas

We built a woven wire fence with two barbed wires on top. We use this fence for fence line weaning of 7 to 8 month old calves. It was easy to see that we made a mistake in using woven wire by the second year. The cattle and calves lean and lay up against the woven wire, this stretches the woven wire making it lose enough that the calves can then go over the woven wire. We have since tied the woven wire to the barbed wire above at least 3 times between each post.

A five wire barbed wire fence is better than a woven wire with 2 barbed wires.  Building a seven wire fence is easier than building a woven wire fence.

Get rid of trees a distance equal to or greater than the height of the trees.

We use electric fence in woods, it is easy to fix when a tree falls on it. Can be powered by a battery, change battery every few weeks.
