| looking to cut down the amount of corn we're feeding to our steers and was wondering if I planted a cover crop in the fall like wheat, barley, rye, or triticale then around the first or second week of May come in and mow it bale it and wrap it. would this make good feed for steers? there are a few dairy's close to me that chop triticale for their herd and a couple of people that chop corn silage for their steers but never seen anyone chop small grains for steers. if anyone is doing this what does your ration look like?
If it would work I was leaning towards using wheat because we grow wheat so I think I could keep a wagon load from harvest to plant and planting 3ish bushels per acre so I would only have around $20 in seed per acre, but if a different crop would be better let me know.
