I cringe every time I hear someone talking about how tough a beef tongue is- especially when I found out that they just boiled it in salt water. Imagine taking an expensive cut of prime rib and boiling it in salt water. I doubt it would turn out much better. A slow simmer in the crock pot however just makes my mouth water. I am starting to think our grandma's just didn't like the idea of eating the tongue, so they figured if they cooked it in a way that made it taste bad, then Grandpa would just give it to the dog instead. Most of these women were great cooks, so there has to be some explanation for it.
