Madison Co. Virginia | Take a couple weeklong vacations.
The times I've been away from the farm for a week at a time, I've come back feeling like I need to 'find my place' again, since everything is going so smoothly for my substitutes. Try the same thing yourself, but then consciously avoid 'finding your place' when you return. Expect that with each vacation and return, you become just a little bit more distanced from the operation.
Also consider stepping away from the day-to-day operations, and focus more on farm tasks that can be completed and done. For example, plan to be at the farm over corn silage harvest, and head up that operation. When it's finished and the equipment is all put away, you can more easily step away again, and focus on that house flip you're working on, or the next trip to see the grandchildren. That's in contrast to doing the breeding and feeding every day, where it's easier to keep doing it than it is to train someone else in to take your place. | |
