Iowa | Yep - the medical billing is downright crooked. My youngest was born with spina bifda and cleft lip. After birth they wanted to run ct scans, mri, cat scans — I quizzed the Dr- it was simply because insurance would pay for it. Same deal had his lip fixed, specialist wanted us to drive 2 hrs every 6 months for the next 10 years so he could bill our insurance for a checkup - he’d literally look in his mouth for 30 seconds “looks good”- they he threw a fit when we said we’d come back 6 months before his cleft palate surgery (at like 9-10 years old)— we’d “cost” him 20k in free insurance paid visits. Most people don’t add their own time and cost, so they think everything is free.
The reason health stuff costs so much is there is no cost control- your insurance company would rather make 5% on 10k/ year than 5% on 8k- so they let hospitals do whatever, then hospital writes off anything billed but not collected. | |
