NEVER is a pretty broad term for this discussion. I'm well north of I 80, and over the years have tried different times in test plots to arrive at the "right" row spacing for soybeans. I felt we should be a little less than 30" most of the time, but generally speaking 15" was always way to much less in our conditions.

Doesn't answer the question for you at all, but theres nothing like trying some different things in your own conditions. For us, not only did 1`5" not yield with the 30"s most years, it was also the least profitable for us even in years where there was an advantage. I'm obviously biased towards 30". There are obviously others who've seen an economic advantage to narrower than 30". I like to see results on my own farm before I commit.
