There's a bit of a point to both side...
I mean, if you've got to ask, you probably either shouldn't be doing whatever it is you're asking about or you at least need to do a lot more homework. On the other hand, if we never tried anything, we'd never learn anything....
I just learned to inflate a tire with ether last week. It took me 3 cans before I got it inflated.... but now I know, and I've still got 10 fingers, 10 toes and 2 eyebrows...


If I was to weld on a fuel tank, I'd be filling it with CO2 or some other inert welding gas IF I had the gas. Otherwise I might run an exhaust into it. I suppose I could always go and get the gas meter off the firetruck and check the LEL and UEL in the tank, but that's kinda playing with fire. Best to have an atmosphere that doesn't support combustion...
