Subject: Welding a diesel tank

Tx
I need to weld a crack around a bung on our stainless steel diesel tank that's on our service trailer. What's the best/safest way to do this? I'm thinking about draining all the diesel and fill it with water would be the safest. But I don't know how to get all the water out after I'm finished welding the crack.
I've heard you could fill the tank with gas from a mig welder(Argon/C02 mix), and then weld the tank. This way I wouldn't have to worry about getting all the water out. Has anyone ever done this?
