When are those two large intake valves open at the same time as the exhaust valves? I would think the truck it is loaded on has a better chance of getting hit by a train than the Turbo has of burning out it's bearings while the engine is not turning.

I'm calling this one an Old Wives Tale.



You got it Mustard, no way to get meaningful air flow through a non running engine.

Several years ago when this subject came up on another site, I did a search of every turbo builder / re builder site I could find.
NOT ONE listed wind blowing down the exhaust pipe and magically spinning the turbo as a cause of failure on their failure analysis page.

EVERY ONE of them suggested covering the exhaust to prevent the entry of rain, road trash, rocks, metal , dirt to protect the turbo and engine.
