I think the problem is that you think all engineers have the same level of ability. I knew a few mechanical engineers that wouldn't know how to change the oil in their car. Good engineers are as rare as good machinists or good mechanics. To be fair, in some cases they don't have any input in how the total machine is designed and in other cases they don't realize where the failure points are until the machine is used out in the field. Some engineers, however, should have become janitors.
