One of the main problems is that equipment is designed be easily manufactured and as inexpensive as they can get away with without losing all of their customers. I would guess that the engineers are less of the problem than the accountants and marketing staff.
My dear old daddy was not so generous, as his usual wish for the SOB that made some ill performing machine was death.
