Near-north Ontario, French River | I dont think engineers are idiots, I know for myself I could never even begin to design some of the things they come up with. They don't however have to ever be involved in the actual building/repair of the machine they are designing. They are simply given a part to design that will fit in 'x' space and cost "Y" per unit, and generally they do a very good job of doing that. In the perfect world the engineers would design something, then a full sized prototype would be designed and FULLY critiqued by mechanics and engineers. Once the servicing issues had been pointed out the mechanics then engineers could modify things to eliminate/negate the servicing issues. Sadly a program like that would cost oodles of money and the bean counters nix such things in a hurry. Where you make the changes is a hard call, like others have said an engineer can design the perfect machine, but then no one can afford it, so it comes down to a comprimise between price and serviceability . |
