You are correct that removing moisture in any way reduces weight. And shrink at the elevator should not bother anyone as long as it is, in fact, "honest weight." The fact is that different elevators use different shrink charts, and some arbitrarily increase the shrink significantly beyond the "honest" shrink for the benefit of their bottom line. This is perfectly acceptable if it is within reason and accepted by the customer base. Sometimes it get beyond that, and then it's time to change elevators, or control your own shrink by drying and storing at home. By delivering dry corn, you take their shrink chart completely out of the equation. I know of no elevator that uses actual shrink in their chart...they're all padded by some amount compared to university or oven-based moisture removal.

If you are thinking that by taking wet corn to town, you are getting paid on more bushels than you would if the corn was dryed at home, you better look at your documentation and do the math over again...I know of NO elevator around here that pays on wet bushels. You can almost always dry at home cheaper than in town...that's one of the ways they make their profit. You might as well make it yourself.
