Subject: RE: Missouri, Illionois ,and Indiana DOT question

east central ND
called the mn dot on a similar issue. wanted to know if I could use my ND farm plates on semi tractor to go get a 28 foot van in MN. Should gross about 25,000lbs, but the trip would be 250 miles from the farm. The very helpful officer on the phone said the 150 mile exemtion for farm plates aplies. after the 150 miles they get fussy. need med card, fuel and trip permits, log books, and get this: anything over 10,000 lbs is considered commercial so you need a CDL. I asked again, saying isn't it 26,000 lb? no was the answer. I asked how about a private truck, not for hire,is that still considered comercial? Yes, he answered. He than went on to say the only thing legal to drive over 10,000 lbs without CDL is an RV. good thing I didn't ask about my old 1 ton pickup, Empty it is 6200 lbs. If I buy that trailler, it would be cheaper to have it pulled to ND, than to get permits and such.
