| I notill beans in 15" rows and roll the stalks usually right behind the drill . The neighbors refer to my old brillion as a "notill" cultimulcher.
I like to leave the stalks standing to help warm and dry the middles as much as possible, but rolling behind the drill does a few things that I feel are worthwhile. First it seems that slightly compacting the surface brings
all the weed seed up at once simplifying weed control(timing anyway) Second, there are nearly always "spots" ( more than usual in 2008 )that are less than dry when we plant beans. The rolling usually closes the slot and keeps it from completely drying out . Rolling creates a mulch on the surface that retains moisture ( also not a problem in 2008) Finally the rolled stalks cut sooooooooo much better in the fall without all those rootballs to fight. I suppose the added benfit is it gives my neighbors something to giggle about. | |
