Subject: Re: population on dryland corn

In eastern Nebraska (non-irrigated) I was consistently advised (by my seed dealers) to up populations to 22,000 plus. After disasterous years in 2002 and 2003, I have steadilly reduced stand, and now plant 15,000 to 18,000. However, I plant triple stack, flex ear, with drought and standability traits the main focus.

I probably miss out on "home run" yields, but believe this approach gives me the best "odds" of producing a good crop. I also like to think by reducing population and buying good hybrids/traits, I'm spending my seed dollars better.

Just my opinion, next time I'll discuss marketing............
