Subject: RE: population on dryland corn

Prairie Home MO
In cen MO we don't have the sand issue but we do have [in most years] heat and drought and highly variable soils. Silt-loam to clay in same fields. I don't worry so much about yield going down in these bad parts of fields, I worry more about standability issues. A few thousand plants can mean the difference between corn standing or not. You really need to pick hybrids here that can stand better and push those. But that's the guess, just how much. I won't remember that ten bu loss due to population as much as the twenty or thirty on the ground plus the headaches of combining. Just my two cents. Worth what it cost you. Robert
