JWC,

It is entirely possible you had a response to the magnesium sulfate (Keserite), either because of Mg deficiency (naturally occurring and/or induced by applying K), or some other secondary or trace element in the Keserite (like most bulk fertilizer sources, it contains some other plant nutrients in small quantities). However, this does nothing to validate the theory of soil Ca:Mg ratio being a worthwhile indicator of anything.
