No I don't think U are off base but I am absolutly convinced that high populations put enough stress on the plants that they become more suseptable to the disease!!! In our case, where the planter screwed up for a few hundred feet and the pop was much lower, the plants are STILL green have large healthy stocks and roots and a beautiful ear filled the the end!!
