Subject: Re: Increasing Plant Population Next Year?

WE started pushing our corn polulations 4 or 5 years ago. Poplatons this year ran 38,000+ on better ground & 37,000+ on the lighter ground in 30" rows. One thing that convinced me to increase populations more than all the propaganda you hear & see was watching the yield monitor & seeing the yield increases where we had overun the planter on endrows & point rows.

Next year we are going to 20" corn in order to space the plants a little farthe r apart in the row. Not sure where we are going to end up on plant populations but will probably at least try some at 40,000 in 20s. Haven't picked a lot of corn yet this year, all too wet, but we are still seeing ouir best yields on the inside endrows & pointrows.

We will be planting soybeans in 20" rows next year as well. Have planted beans everywhere from 36" rows down to 7" and the last several years mostly 15" with a few 30". The heavy rains in June played havoc with our test strips of 15" vs 30" but what little we were able to salvage there was virtually no yield difference between the 2 row widths, less than .1 bpa.

I would agree with Ed on bean populations, we are seeing just as good of bean yields at lower planting poplulations. Tried for 150,000 in 15" & 125,000 in 30". When we went to 15s back in 1997 we were planting most of our beans in the 175,000 -185,000 range.
