The reason for this is that many of the newest corn genetics produce ears with less flex capability and more stress tolerance and plant health than you are probably used to dealing with. If the plant is going to produce the same size ear regardless of population, and you don't need to put more fertilizer on, it only makes sense to harvest as many ears as possible, thus the push for higher populations. This is very hybrid specific, though, so you need to do your homework to know which ones need a high population for maximum yield and which ones have more flex capability.
