Subject: Re: Questions about Coors & cell phone differential service

To elaborate on John's comment:

A data connection is a little different than a voice connection. A data connection requires less signal strength than a voice connection. In addition, the amount of data transmitted through the phone streaming RTK correction signal is (far) less compared to the data with a voice connection.

An external antenna on top of the cab or an external entenna on top of the roof with a booster will increase range and signal strength on both the cell modem as well as with a PDA cell phone with data connection (and/or voice connection). There will be no difference between the two. The advantage of the PDA cell phone is the access to commodity prices, E-mail, text-messages, weather, etc. while streaming RTK-correction signal.

I agree with John, that there is much confusion about the CORS networks, cell phone transmitted correction signal, range, single base versus VRS, etc. Please do the research and visit with growers that run with a cell phone system. We have systems running from single base CORS, VRS CORS, and with grower run base stations that came with the AutoSteer system, all running PDA cell phones to receive the correction signal. None of them use boosters! They do use external antennas. Like DG N. AL was saying, there is no comparison between radio and cell phone based systems.

No system is perfect! This system does require:
1) A base station within a 20 mile range that can stream the correction signal to a wireless cell phone connection (unless a VRS capable CORS Network is available!);
2) Cell phone coverage in all fields;

If a farm requires more than 3 RTK-AutoSteer systems, this system might not be as economical. However, the ease of use, convenience, functionality and the consistency of the correction signal might be worth the extra cost!

Henk.
