NW Washington | There are specs for dimension lumber that engineers use to design buildings similar to specs for steels but figuring out what they say and how much the beam can handle will take someone who knows a little engineering or has a handy computer program. Can't remember the name of the organization that puts out these numbers, but google.com could probably find them.
Personally, the LVL laminated engineered beam now available would be a better choice and the dealer should be able to give you some strength figures for your given span and load. No knots or other flaws common in regular lumber. The only issue might be how well it would tolerate being wet, but you could paint it probably be OK, and I suspect you will store this rig indoors anyway.
