For what 8 treated 2x12s would cost you could probably get some 8" channel iron that would last as long as the rest of the running gear.  On our 16.5' hayracks we use rough cut 6x8"s cause we had the trees for the lumber but I think a steel subframe would be a longer lasting and stronger way to go.
