For one thing, the 5.3 was almost exclusively in a 1/2 ton, I had one with 3.73 gears, got 15.5 mpg on short trips and 18-19 on a long trip. I have an '04, 3/4 4 x 4 now with 6.0 and 3.73 gears, gets about 13 -14 on short trips, I have gotten 16 on a long trip if I stay at 70 or under.
