Luke you would really enhance the anaerobic activity if you stirred the pit every so often (ie. weekly).  There are lots of these bacterial additives out there that all help increase the microbial activity in the manure pits just like you're doing.  The problem is the oxygen levels are very, very low in the pit and these bacteria quickly die.  Hence, most of these additives instructions say to add more every couple of weeks to replace those that die off.  By stirring the pit you'll be reoxygenating the system and keeping all those good critters alive.  We have a couple of pits here with windmills that pump air into the bottom of the pit.  All swear the smells are reduced which is a sign that things are staying more oxygenated and that the consistancy (ie. color of the manure) is more uniform.
