Subject: Re: For those of you that use landrollers

I rolled beans when they were two to four inches tall last year. The ground was rough and lumpy with lots of root balls and some rocks. I did not notice any dead bean plants later. They recommend rolling during the heat of the day. The beans yielded well, better than the unrolled ones but that would be an unfair comparison as there was not a side by side comparison. The best part was the lack of dirt and rock coming into the combine. A few year ago a rock did $8500 damage to the rotor, cage and concaves. Yield increases are attributed to being able to cut the plant lower. Others claim rolling after the plants are up stimulates the plant for better yield. I have not seen any hard research to verify this. I have heard rolling right after planting on tilled ground makes the weeds come on faster with the seed soil contact. All in all I think there is a lot to learn about the timing of rolling.
