Subject: feed bunks regular or dairy style

Cullom, Illinois
I'm considering building a confinement barn to background 500# calves in. I see in some of the publications that dairy farmers don't use feed bunks. They just dump the feed on the concrete in front of the stanchions. Is this cheaper than feed bunks or is there a different reason for doing it this way?
