Subject: Strategies, not solutions

Lancaster, OH
I've been in with slugs for many years. What I have determined other that Deadline products work is that we need to figure out how to work around them.

1) Early, fast growing crop. This is where the starters come in but select fast growing hybrids early and give them a great chance with residue tools, etc.

2) Manage residue. We used some RRSB for a cover here after wheat. The dropping leaves contained enough N that it really broke down the wheat residue. Where we had been replanting areas of corn before, they have not had to do that following cover crop soybeans. Keep in mind that Cover Crop soybeans will not lay the residue on the ground that double crop will. The soil will receive a lot of light.

3) Scout. If you have a cool, wet spring or your hatch comes with a small crop, scout and use the bait where the outbreak occurs. Don't wait for the weather to turn around--it won't do it quick enough.

Sorry there are no simple solutions. It's fun to talk about beer baits, spraying salty solutions at night and the like but these three things are methods that have worked in heavy slug pressure in eastern Ohio.
