Ferric phosphate is a non toxic slug bait that is available for gardens that might have some ag application. Controls on poison baits make them a tough to use.

Slugs need a place to hide from the sun during the day and something to lay there eggs under and cover crops and crop residue make a good home for slugs. BTW, you are baling straw Redekop makes a rig that catches the chaff and then dumps it on top of the straw windrow so that much more of it ends up in the bale.
