Virginia | Forgive me for not mentioning the importance of spreading residue. I now run everything through the straw chopper and have a chaff spreader. Previous combines didn't have chaff spreaders and we had more slug problems then. We went to row cleaners about the same time we went with the chaff spreader.
The single best control I've seen for slugs is early planting. Get the corn off to a good start and get ahead of them. The ones you have in the spring are the juveniles. The later you plant the bigger the slugs are. They are really a problem if you have a cold wet spring. If you're planting corn after wheat, the slugs are pretty good size then and I can see where you could really have problems.
Good luck to you. Slugs can be really challenging! | |
