southern MN | I would think along those lines, you lost a few lbs of P & K 'in a year or so' when it woulda broke down. If this is light soil, you lost a bit of organic matter, but that wouldn't show on a soil test & not something you need to return at the end of your lease.
I'd talk to the land owner about the bit of P & K lost but not make a big deal of it.
when your lease is up, you can likewise remove the stalks, if you so choose. Come out even then.
Edit: The problem is the stalks on top of the ground would not show up in a soil test for some time, so testing now vs then really won't matter. It would be normal for the crop - including the stalks - to belong to the renter, so not surprising he got them yet.
