Subject: Winter Feeding of Resting Bulls???

Earlton Ontario
Have my Angus bulls separated from the herd for the winter. One bull is 6 years old in average condition about a score of 6. The second bull is four years old and came off pasture around a score of 3. These two bulls worked very well for me this year servicing 50 cows and 25 heifers from May 20 till we brought home last Friday. They are tired though and the lack of quality pasture real drew them down in size the last month even though I supplemented with good hay.

They are just going to have good hay ad-lib for the first week then starting to step in a 14% protein mix of rolled barley, peas and corn at about .5 lb/day till I get up to around 20 pounds per day. Of course salt and mineral.

Questions

1) Is this a reasonable way to get the bulls back in shape??? If i'm missing something please elaborate.

2) I was told high grain diets in bulls will make them "mean" any truth???

3) Is 1:1 mineral adequate???

4) Should they receive Rumensin???
