Bill, I agree on the point of cows being likely to be less trouble calving than heifers. However folks rarely sell good young purebred Hereford cows (although I did buy 2 commercials) and registered cows would require winning the lottery.

Also if I retain heifers from my best current cows (the primary way I want to grow), I am going to have 3 or 4 heifers every spring.

Especially with these two "calving ease" registered heifers having had heifer calves, about all I am going to buy from now on is an unrelated registered Huth bull every couple years. This is about as far as I want to go into the registered end.

Another benefit of a very tight calving season is I am going to try to be around at that time.
