IMO, there are some things that all the number crunching in the world can't solve. Numbers don't and can't tell everything. Sometimes you just have to go with what your gut tells you.

Yes, you need to watch the birth weights/EPD but when I go to buy a heifer bull I want him to "look right" for the job. This means a "streamlined look" with a long face and smooth shoulders. Not a short, blocky, "bulldog" head like he smashed his face into the back of a truck.

I once went to look at some bulls and was very impressed by the numbers on a particular bull in the catolog until I saw the bull in person. He might have had good numbers but I wouldn't have wanted him for a bull. Virtually all of his herdmates were "head and shoulders" above him. This bull had short legs, a short body, and a huge gut compared to the rest. IMO, he didn't fit in at all and should have been a steer.
